Shire track athletes capture top spots in PVC championship

ORONO, Maine – The Houlton-Greater Houlton Christian School girls track and field team set school records and brought home individual championships Friday at the Penobscot Valley Conference Small School Championship.

Shire Teanne Ewings continued her strong running career by capturing first place in the 800 meter run, 1,600 meter and as a member of the 4×400 relay team. With her performance, Ewings earned female athlete of the meet honors.

“Our very own Teanne Ewings was named outstanding female athlete of the meet as voted on by the coaches of the PVC teams,” coach Chris Rines said. “Unlike the Aroostook League which awards their top performing athletes the award solely based on points accrued, the PVC takes into consideration coach’s opinions on the top performances as well.  Teanne narrowly won the 1600m with just a margin of 6 100ths of a second over second place, Ruth White of Orono.”

For the 4×400 relay team, it marks the second straight year that the Shires have won the event. The Shire 4×800 relay team also captured top honors on the day, setting a school record in the process.

Houlton’s Arianna Ardell broke the school long jump record jumping 15 feet and 7 inches.

“The combined Houlton-GHCA track squad came out strong at the PVC small school track meet in Orono at their fabulous newly renovated Track and Field stadium,” Rines said. “The day started out quite warm and muggy but eventually as night began to fall the temperatures cooled off and overall made for some great running conditions.”

Orono won both the boys and girls titles. The Orono girls scored 134 points, followed by Bucksport with 133 points and Houlton-GHCA third with 86.5.

The Shire boys did not have enough members to score as a team.
