HOULTON, Maine – The regular season is a fond memory for local baseball and softball squads, but thanks to an open tournament format, more games will be played.
The regular season came to a close June 1, with several local teams sitting at or near the top of the standings in their respective divisions. The following is a look at how Aroostook County squads finished and who their first opponents will be.
Softball
In Class D North, Wisdom/Madawaska finished a perfect 12-0 on the year and is the top seed in the region. The squad receives a first-round bye and will host the winner of No. 8 Machias-No. 9 Schenck in the quarterfinals (likely to be played Thursday, June 9).
Hodgdon (12-2) is ranked third in the region and will host No. 14 Central Aroostook (3-11), on Tuesday, June 7, at 4 p.m.
Southern Aroostook (9-5) is ranked sixth in the region and hosts No. 11 Jonesport-Beals (2-10) Tuesday, June 7, at 12:30 p.m.
Katahdin (10-4) is ranked seventh and hosts No. 10 Ashland (6-8) on Tuesday, June 7, at 4 p.m.
East Grand (2-10) is ranked 13th and travels to No. 4 Stearns (11-5), date and time to be determined.
Fort Fairfield (0-14) finished 16th and has opted not to participate in the open tournament this year.
In Class C North, Houlton/GHCA (9-5) finished sixth in the region and will host No. 11 Fort Kent (7-9) Monday, June 6, at 4 p.m.
In Class B North, Presque Isle (7-9) finished ninth in the region and travels to No. 8 Winslow (9-7), Tuesday, June 7, at 2 p.m.
Caribou (0-16) finished 15th in the region and is scheduled to face No. 2 Ellsworth (12-4) Monday, June 6, at 3:30 p.m.
Baseball
In Class D North, Wisdom is the top-ranked team in the region. The Pioneers finished 9-3 on the season and will host No. 16 Jonesport-Beals (3-9) Tuesday, June 7, at 3 p.m.
Katahdin (10-4) finished sixth in the region and hosts No. 11 Hodgdon (8-6) Tuesday, June 7, at 4 p.m.
Southern Aroostook (7-7) finished ninth in the region and travels to No. 8 Penobscot Valley (8-6) of Howland on Tuesday, June 7, at 3 p.m.
Madawaska (8-6) finished 10th in the region and travels to No. 7 Lee Academy (8-8) on Tuesday, June 7, for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
Fort Fairfield (6-8) finished 12th in the region and travels to No. 5 Woodland (12-2) Tuesday, June 7, at 4:30 p.m.
Van Buren (5-9) finished 14th and travels to No. 3 Bangor Christian (12-4) on Tuesday June 7, at 7 p.m. in a game played at Husson University.
Washburn/Easton (3-9) finished 15th in the region and face No. 2 Stearns (11-5) of Millinocket Tuesday, June 7, at 3 p.m.
Central Aroostook (0-14) placed 17th and has opted not to participate in the open tournament.
In Class C North, Fort Kent (12-4) finished second in the region and hosts No. 15 Narraguagus (4-9) Monday, June 6, at 1:30 p.m.
Houlton/GHCA (10-4) finished fifth and hosts No. 12 Calais (7-9) Tuesday, June 7, at 5:30 p.m.
In Class B North, Caribou (5-11) finished 10th and travels to No. 7 Mount Desert Island (8-8) of Bar Harbor Monday, June 6, at 3 p.m.
Presque Isle (1-15) finished 15th and travels to No. 2 Old Town (10-6) on Monday, June 6, at 4:30 p.m.
