The past two-and-a-half years have been one of our biggest challenges. The pandemic was not something any of us were prepared for. We had to figure out new ways to raise money, keep our volunteers safe and healthy by following the necessary protocols and still rescue animals.
Probably the most difficult thing we faced was having no vet care. We went a year-and-a-half not being able to do simple things like neuters and spays. We were limited to what we could take in, which was heartbreaking.
We tried everything and finally after writing many letters and making many phone calls we were accepted as clients at Chester Animal Hospital (near Lincoln). The wonderful staff at Chester welcomed us with open arms! They gave our animals the vet care they so deserved. We were also accepted at Veazie Vet Clinic, so between the two places we now had the best vet care.
Yes the drive was long and yes the trips took most of the day but that did not matter. What mattered is that we were able to start doing what we were meant to do again and that was to rescue animals in need.
Now, we are faced with another dilemma and that is the rising gas prices. Every trip down costs close to $100. But again we will do what is necessary.
They say when one door closes another one opens.
Last week we were able to make the trip to the vet in Canada once again. For the first time in over 2 years we traveled that familiar road , the road we knew by heart. It was only 35 miles and it definitely saved us time and gas. We walked into the lobby and I can honestly say that I have never been so happy to be in any one place. We were greeted with hugs and smiles and suddenly it seemed like we had never left.
While the pandemic has taken so much away, it has also taught us to never ever take anything for granted, and while it has brought out the worst in many, it has brought the best in just as many.
Vet care is an intricate part of animal rescue and we can never afford to be without it. Thank you Dr. Monteith and staff for welcoming us back with open arms. It’s good to be home.
