ISLAND FALLS, Maine – The Island Falls Lakes Association held its annual fishing derby on July 9.
Headquarters for the derby was the Snowmobile club on Route 2. Anglers of all ages fished on both Pleasant Pond and Mattawamkeag Lake. Though conditions were tough due to strong wind resulting in rough water, the anglers persevered and delivered their catch in time to weigh in.
The fish were then fried or grilled and accompanied by a full array of side dishes and deserts provided by Island Falls Lakes Association trustees and their families. Following the meal, raffle prizes were drawn. Prizes included a game camera, fish finder, kayak paddles and many other items as well as numerous gift certificates.
Among the big winners on the day was Cole Signoretti in the youth division who turned in the first and second place small mouth bass as well as the first place salmon and first place trout.
In the adult division Kim Hagan took first place with an impressive small mouth bass weighing in at 3.63 pounds and Jim Kelly took first in the salmon category and second in the trout category each weighing 3.3 pounds and 0.67 pounds respectively.
The Island Falls Lakes Association is a non-profit organization established to protect the ecosystems of Mattawamkeag Lake and Pleasant Pond as well as its watersheds. The next event is a recreational Canoe/Kayak/SUP race held at Birch Point Campground on July 31st. Registration begins at noon.
