PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Central Aroostook Probus met on July 19.
Galen Weibley, director of economic and community development for the city of Presque Isle, was the guest and delivered a presentation on city efforts to aid the private sector, expanding the tax base and residential and industrial growth.
Residential construction saw a 25 percent growth and commercial growth was at 10 percent in 2021. Hospitality was up by 8 percent and liquor sales by 40 percent. Weibley pointed out that these figures were likely impacted by the pandemic.
Housing saw 13 percent growth and demolition of dangerous buildings increased by 75 percent, with the city council very interested in safe living conditions.
Presque Isle has had growth in residents from away. The primary attraction is safety, with available water coming in second. Broadband and educational quality are also attractions.
The TIF zone and growth in jobs and private investment were also discussed. At this time in 2022, the city has seen 11 new businesses.
