75 Years Ago – Sept. 11, 1947
Sherman soldier wins first place — T/5 Gordon Lane, grandson of Mrs. Eldora Grant, in care of Ivan Hunt, Sherman, has won first place in the metal work section of the Army Special Services crafts contest semi-finals held recently at Philippine Ryukyus Command headquarters in Manila.
Offering substantial monetary prizes, the crafts contest is designed to stimulate creative ability among American servicemen in the Far East Command. Holding elimination contests at unit, area and command levels, Special Services will sponsor the final judging in Tokyo among winning contestants from military headquarters in the Philippines, Korea and Yokohama, Japan. The Sherman soldier is attached to the 504th Ordnance Depot on Okinawa.
50 Years Ago – Sept. 13, 1972
Three promoted in B&A realignment — Vinal J. Welch, chief engineer for the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad, announced a realignment of the management functions in the road’s engineering department and the promotions of three Houlton men. O. Dale Anthony, formerly superintendent of bridges and buildings, became assistant chief engineer of bridges and structures, with responsibility for engineering as well as bridges and buildings. Gordon S. Duncan, formerly assistant to the chief engineer, became assistant chief engineer with responsibilities for the departmental safety program as well as for budget and special projects. Garald E. Wiggins, formerly a B&A mechanic, became supervisor of bridges and buildings. The changes were brought about by the resignation of Carvell G. Hatfield, principal assistant engineer, who resigned to engage in private consulting engineering practice in Houlton.
Home on Leave — SSgt. Dale Hamilton is spending 30 days with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Hamilton. Sgt. Hamilton just returned home from Thailand, where he had a year of duty, and will leave for Germany in September for a three-year tour.
Remember when — Sirloin steaks were $1.45 per pound, porterhouse $1.55 a pound and top round $1.45 a pound.
25 Years Ago – Sept. 24, 1997
Area gains with education center — It is often said that education is the key to the future. If that saying is true, the future of Houlton Regional Hospital and the people it serves is looking brighter. Hospital officials announced Monday that beginning next month, the community will be able to utilize the new Center for Community Health Education, thanks to the financial support of the Health Services Foundation.
Boy’s high school soccer — Burning out last Thursday in Hodgdon, the “shire fire” turned HOdgdon’s hopes of avenging an earlier loss to ashles, downing the Hawks, 5-0. Houlton coach Matt Tardy was once again very pleased with his team’s performance, “The kids looked good. Offensively, they passed the ball well and controlled the play.” The Shires outshot the Hawks 34-4.
