HOULTON, Maine — The group Mothers Against Drunk Driving is seeking participants to either walk or run for drunk driving awareness during the sixth annual Walk Like MADD event in Houlton on Saturday, Oct. 1.
Organized by Nicole Hutchinson, MADD’s Maine chapter leader, the walk was created in memory of her younger sister, Darcie, who was killed at age 21 by a repeat drunk-driving offender in 1996.
Nicole Hutchinson, a native of Houlton who resides in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, has returned for the past six years to participate in the walk. Prior to becoming an officially sanctioned MADD Walk, Houlton resident Heather Campbell held a walk for several years in Darcie’s memory, as the two were classmates.
Alex Otte, MADDs national president, will also attend the Houlton walk.
Hutchinson has set a goal of raising $8,000 at this year’s event. Last year, the walk generated $11,500 for MADD, while in 2019, $12,500 was collected. The walk was not held in 2020 due to COVID-19.
To register for the event, visit the Walk Like MADD event page. The walk begins at 8:30 a.m.
