MARS HILL, Maine — On a cold night at the Central Aroostook soccer field Tuesday, Oct. 4, the Ashland Hornets defeated the host-Panthers with a thrilling last-second goal, while the Panther boys rolled to a 4-2 victory.
Ashland’s Maggie Landeen produced the game-winning goal for the Hornets with just five seconds remaining on the clock to give Ashland the victory.
The Hornets first got on the scoreboard in the first half as Kayla MacLean scored the only goal of the half. Panther Izabel Pryor got her team rolling as she scored at the start of the second half to tie the game 1-1.
That goal was shortly followed by another Panther goal, this time by Abby Hines to gain CA a 2-1 advantage.
But the Hornets stung back with a second goal from McLean to tie the game again, setting up the exciting finish for Landeen to deliver the game-winner
As night came to the Mars Hill field, so did the boys team for Central Aroostook and Ashland. The Panther boys dominated in the first half with two goals from Brighton Kingsbury slipping the ball past Ashland goalie Hunter Cunningham for the 2-0 lead.
The Hornets came back with two goals from Inyas Janoch and Will St Peter to tie the game 2-2, but the Panthers pulled away with two more goals in the final 15 minutes with another goal from Kingsbury and fourth from Liam Shaw to end the game. The Panther goalie Carson Cushman had multiple saves from Hornet shots.
The Ashland girls team stands at 7-2 for the season with two away games on Oct. 6 at Wisdom/Van Buren and Katahdin on Oct. 8. Central Aroostook girls have a 6-4 record so far and will play a home game against Fort Kent on Oct. 7 and an away game at Washburn on Oct. 12.
The Ashland boys team sit at 2-9 on the season with a home game against Wisdom/Van Buren on Oct. 6 and two away games at Easton on Oct. 12 and Washburn on Oct. 17 to close their season. Central Aroostook boys bring their record up 4-6 with a home game against Fort Kent on Oct. 7 and an away game against Washburn on Oct. 12.
