115 Years Ago – Oct. 24, 1907
Stocking the lake — F.G. Webster received a consignment of 2500 trout from the hatchery at Caribou Monday for stocking the little Machias lake.
Turning on the electric — G.W. Irving and C.F. Millar made a trip to Aroostook Falls last Thursday to be present at the turning on of the electric current which furnished lights to the village of Presque Isle. It is said that the minimum horsepower, developed at low water, will be 5,000.
100 Years Ago – Oct. 26, 1922
Returned from trip — Chas. Stetson returned Monday from a two weeks’ trip to Augusta, Lewiston, and other cities, in the interests of the potato business.
Meeting on building a hospital — There was a mass meeting held recently in Van Buren to consider the question of building a hospital in that place. The site finally accepted is one opposite the residence of Hon. Peter C. Keegan, and donated by Mr. and Mrs. Keegan for the building of a hospital. They have also agreed to give the lot of land between the hospital and the street to the town of Van Buren which will be converted into a small park. On Thursday afternoon at the office of Mr. Keegan, the committee assembled to take the first step toward the realization of the project and an application for a charter was signed by the members.
75 Years Ago – Oct. 23, 1947
Page is Director State Association — J.H. Page, Caribou, manager of the New England Starch Company, was recently named a member of the board of directors of the Associated Industries of Maine. Page’s term will become effective Jan. 1, 1948, for the new appointment.
Contractor aids CAA with rolling a new athletic field — The Bridge Construction Company, who are engaged by Caribou in reconstruction of Sweden and High streets, donated, at no cost to the CAA, the use of their roller for the new athletic field at Teague Park. Many high school students assisted in picking rocks from the field under Coach Brewer’s supervision, before it was rolled. Help was also given in raking. The seeding of the field had been done a few days before.
25 Years Ago – Oct. 22, 1997
National Business Women’s Week — In a proclamation signed recently by Mayor Dave Corriveau, Oct. 20 through Oct. 26 is recognized as National Business Women’s Week for the city of Caribou. There with Corriveau for the signing was Shelley O’Rourke, president of the local chapter of Business and Professional Women.
Lucky winner — Donella Sherwood of Fort Fairfield accepted a Meco electric barbecue grill from Maine Public service Company representatives Glen leach and Mike Wallace. The grand prize was drawn at a Customer Appreciation 80th Anniversary celebration last month at all MPS office locations.
