HOULTON, Maine – The stage of the Houlton Community Arts Center is about to get freaky.

Students from Houlton Middle-High School have been hard at work rehearsing for this year’s school play, Disney’s “Freaky Friday.”

Featuring an ensemble cast of more than 40 students, this year’s production is based on the 1972 book “Freaky Friday” by Mary Rodgers and the 2016 Disney Theatrical Productions stage adaptation by Bridget Carpenter.

Three shows will be offered this year, with the curtains opening on Friday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. Additional shows are slated for Saturday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 20, at 2 p.m.

Disney’s “Freaky Friday” tells the story of an overworked mother, Katherine Blake, and her teenage daughter, Ellie, who magically swap bodies. The two must then find a way to change things back, while also getting into a number of adventures.

“‘Freaky Friday,’ a new musical based on the celebrated novel by Mary Rodgers and the hit Disney films, is a heartfelt, comedic, and unexpectedly emotional update on an American classic,” said director Kevin Mania.

Senior Lydia Byron has the lead role of Ellie, with junior Kaitlyn Kenney playing her mother Katherine. Other students in lead roles include Presley Goodwin as Fletcher Blake and Nicholas Hardy in the role of Mike.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors. Advance ticket sales are preferred and can be obtained by emailing friday@rsu29.org or by calling 207-538-3129.
