Washburn splits with East Grand in hoop opener

WASHBURN, Maine — The Washburn boys and girls basketball teams had a split start to the 2022-23 season Saturday, Dec. 10, as the squad hosted East Grand of Danforth.

The Beaver boys rolled to a 53-30 victory over East Grand, but the girls had a more difficult time against the Vikings, falling 41-14.

In the boys varsity game, the Beavers built a commanding lead on opening day by 20 points. Derek Cruz led the attack for the Beavers with 13 points, along with teammates Parker Corey adding 11 points and Gage Espling following up with 10 points.

The East Grand Vikings tried to claw their way back, but couldn’t keep up with the Beavers aggressive offense and iron wall defense. For the Vikings, Derek Golding netted 12 points during the game.

In the girls contest, Washburn’s Logan Curtis led her team with six points, while Hannah Scott and Madelyn Johnston both chipped in three points. For East Grand, Jenna Boyd was the top scorer overall with 10 points, while Jayden Williams and Isabelle Cowger chipped in with eight points a piece.
