115 Years Ago – Dec. 4, 1907
Work is being suspended for now — Work on the large house of W.A. Long on Collins street has been suspended until spring. This house is one of the largest in town, being 31 by 57 feet, three stories high and containing 23 rooms. The carpenter’s work has been under the supervision of J.C. Wright. The house is well made throughout, and has a large barn attached.
Announcement of candidacy — The announcement of Charles G. Briggs, Esq., of Caribou, of his candidacy for the office of register of probate, which announcement was made in last week’s Review, is an interesting one to the people of Aroostook. This part of The County has not for a long time had a register of probate. Mr. Briggs is a young, active, keen and business-like attorney, who would seem to be amply qualified to fulfill the duties of this important office. We commend his candidacy to the thoughtful people of The County, and we are much inclined here and now to predict that Mr. Briggs will be the successful aspirant for this office.
100 Years Ago – Dec. 7, 1922
Something in the sky — A flying machine is reported to have passed over this village Monday, going in a westerly direction. The mission of the plane is not known, but we do not credit the rumor that the pilot was endeavoring to elevate the price of potatoes.
A new shoe repair shop opens — Chas. LeClair has opened a shoe repair shop in Stockholm.
75 Years Ago – Dec. 4, 1947
Local Red Cross worker attends New York Institute — Home Service Secretary, Mrs. Hope S. Stewart, of the Caribou Chapter American National Red Cross is in New York this week attending classes of instruction being held there by the New York Area Headquarters.
Benefit party given North Caribou Grammar School — A most successful party for the benefit of the new grammar school at North Caribou was held Sunday in that community. A fish pond for children, door prizes, card games and refreshments comprised the entertainment. The committee in charge extended thanks to the Caribou merchants who donated many prizes for the event. Serving on the prize collection committee were: Mrs. Irenee Berube, Mrs. Arcillia Jacques, Mrs. Louise McNalley and Mrs. John Morin.
25 Years Ago – Dec. 3, 1997
And the winner is — Caribou Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kirk Tibbetts and director Patty Corriveau joined Peter Edwards of Channel X to draw the winning entry from the 1,211 received during Friday night’s Moonlight Sale. The winning entry belonged to Henriette LaGasse of Caribou. She received $800 worth of gift certificates at area stores.
50th Anniversary — A joyous celebration of the 50th wedding anniversary for Roy and Dorothy Doak was presented by their daughters Melanie Watson, Cynthia Morrow, Jennifer Pelkey and her husband MIke at Gray Memorial United Methodist Church Nov. 8. Many friends and family honored the couple with their presence.
