CARIBOU, Maine — With snow making things look all the more festive outside, volunteers gathered at the Caribou Recreation Center Monday morning to brighten the holidays for local senior citizens.
This is the third year for Age Friendly Caribou’s Senior Santa project, through which the organization joins forces with the Aroostook Agency on Aging to deliver gifts to Meals on Wheels recipients.
Earlier this month, volunteers placed a tree decorated with paper ornaments in the rec center lobby, each inscribed with a gift idea. Community members were invited to take the ornaments, and then bring their donated gifts to the center.
On Monday morning, the tables were heaped with a mountain of gifts ranging from toiletries to blankets, gloves to local gift certificates. Armed with rolls of wrapping paper, volunteers dove in and started making merry packages.
“This is great, because it’s for the seniors, who are often forgotten,” said Wanda Theriault, one of the volunteers present.
The gifts will be given to Meals on Wheels drivers for delivery to Caribou area seniors.
