FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — The Fort Fairfield Tigers beat out Washburn in two games on Friday, Jan. 6, with the boys wrapping up at 74-46 and the girls claiming a 51-20 victory.
The Class D boys varsity basketball action began with the Tigers taking an early lead. Gabe Theriault racked up 20 points with Blake Senal not too far behind at 15 points.
Derek Cruz scored 16 points for the Beavers with Parker Corey and Mitch Turner each contributing 13 points.
Tiger Cayden Ala and Beaver Mitch Turner each managed to sink a single 3-pointer on the outside.
The Tigers attacked the rim while putting pressure on the visiting Beavers with aggressive defense, while the Beavers looked for the best route to score inside the Tigers’ paint.
The Beavers are at 1-7 after losing to Ashland 45-33 on Saturday, Jan. 7. Fort Fairfield stands at 5-1 for the season.
The girls varsity basketball game followed and for the Tigers, Kassidy Gorneault took off with 22 points while Mattey Devine put away 17 points.
Washburn’s Logan Curtis and Madelyn Johnston both racked up nine points with Johnston banking a couple of 3-pointers.
Tiger defenders managed to double up on Beaver players to keep the pressure up. When Washburn had possession of the ball, players found openings for shots both inside and outside the Tigers court. The Beavers tried to defend against the Tigers inside shots but couldn’t keep every shot from going into the basket.
The Beavers left Fort Fairfield with a 2-6 record, while the Tigers are 3-4 for the Class D season.
