HOULTON, Maine – After a rough start to its season, success has finally arrived for the Houlton-Hodgdon Black Hawk hockey team.
The Black Hawks defeated Old Town/Orono 4-3 Jan. 4 at the Millar Civic Center, giving the squad its first victory of the year. That win was short-lived, however, as the team fell 11-0 to John Bapst/Hermon/Bangor Christian/Deer Isle-Stonington on the road Saturday.
Against Old Town/Orono, Konnor Lynds tallied three goals, while Riley Fitzpatrick added one to give the Black Hawks their first win of the year. Patrick Marino and Zachary Hoops both had two assists, while Garrett Fitzpatrick had one.
For Old Town/Orono, Dylan Davis, Alex McCannell and Ian Bouchard each had one goal.
Dawson Cole made 37 saves in goal for the Black Hawks, facing 40 shots. Brock Parks made 25 saves on 29 shots for Old Town/Orono.
“It was nice to get the first win of the season,” coach Karl Enroth said. “We started the game with some scoring chances and scored that all important first goal of the game. We continued to play competitively through two periods of hockey and Konnor Lynds took advantage of some scoring chances to give the team a three goal lead.”
The Black Hawks had some penalties in the third period, which gave Old Town/Orono enough momentum to make it a close contest.
“Fortunately goalie Dawson Cole was able to make enough key saves to hold Old Town/Orono and we escaped with the 4-3 win,” the coach said. “We got strong play from defensemen Riley Fitzpatrick, Garett Fitzpatrick, and Zachary Hoops playing a lot of minutes during the game.”
Results from the Black Hawks game with John Bapst/Hermon/Bangor Christian/Deer Isle-Stonington were not reported.
The Black Hawks are now 1-5 on the season.
