115 Years Ago – Jan. 23, 1908
New photographic studio opens — A. W. Plummer, the ‘ping pong man,’ who has opened a photographic studio in the Cary block, was employed as photographer by the Associated Press at the time of the San Francisco earthquake, and has many of the original pictures taken at that time.
Ice cutting has begun — Ice cutting on Collins pond has commenced. Fenderson & Soucia have not commenced to lay in their season’s supply as yet. The ice on the river is about 16 inches thick, and probably will be 20 inches thick by next week, when the above-mentioned dealers will begin to cut in earnest.
100 Years Ago – Jan. 25, 1923
Making history in Aroostook — For the first time in the history of Aroostook there will be two women jurors on the panel at the February term of S. J. Court which meets in Caribou next month. Miss Vivian B. Warren and Mrs. Emily Tibbetts, both of this town.
New owners — Cecil E. Billington has purchased the insurance business of L. H. Soucy. Mr. Soucy expects to leave next week for Bangor where he has been offered the general agency position for the Security Mutual Insurance Co.
75 Years Ago – Jan. 22, 1948
Attends spring fashion show — Mrs. Hope Lovley and Mrs. Harry E. Shaw were in Boston from Saturday until Thursday of last week attending the spring fashion shows at the Parker House.
Caribou U of M student wins scholarship — Roland J. Bouchard , son of Mr. and Mrs. Euclide J. Bouchard of Caribou, is one of four boys who have just received scholarships at the University of Maine. One of the others is John H. Braggs, Orono, son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Frank E. Pendleton.
25 Years Ago – Jan. 28, 1998
Farmer of the year to be honored — The Maine Potato Board will honor Jay McCrum as its Farmer of the Year and Keith Labrie as its Young Farmer of the Year. The board will also present the President’s Award to a person who has made an impact on the potato industry over the past year. Last year’s winner was John Logan, who passed away in November.
Three stations will be sold — Three local stations — WQHR 96.1, WBPW 96.9, and WOZI 103 — have been sold to Pilot Communications LLC for $5.51 million by Four Seasons Communications Inc. The sale is final, pending approval by the Federal Communications Commission. The three stations are based out of the Caribou Road building in Presque Isle.
