PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — A formal event raised more than $12,000 to support the United Way of Aroostook’s community service.
The United Way hosted its Black Tie Gala at the Sargent Family Community Center, along with a live auction, on Jan. 21.
The funds raised from the auction and ticket sales will benefit organizations like Aroostook County Action Program, Aroostook Agency on Aging and Homeless Services of Aroostook, to name a few.
“What we’re seeing right now is homelessness, food insecurity are really the biggest issues people are facing,” United Way of Aroostook Executive Director Sarah Duncan said.
United Way works to break the cycle of poverty with a focus on education, financial stability, and health essential for living well, according to their website.
Some of the items auctioned included a Quoggy Jo Ski Center family membership, a Sedona, Arizona, golf package and diamond earrings.
The auctioneer at the gala was Chad Brewer of United Insurance as bids were made for the 13 items and packages included in the auction.
Almost 200 people attended the gala, which featured 10 different tables sponsored by local businesses and organizations.
“The great thing about events like [the Black Tie Gala] is bringing the community together for a great cause,” Treasurer and Board member for United Insurance Chris Condon said.
The cocktail hour for the gala began at 5:30 p.m. and had a live performance from Sherri Calhoun with the auction kicking off at 7:30 p.m.
