Yes, it really was brrrr – The saying that everyone talks about the weather but no one does anything about it is very evident in Caribou. The current cold spell is easily the longest and most severe on record since 1940, the year in which the local U. S. Weather Bureau office was established. The present cold spell started January 10,the temperature being below zero daily since that date, with the exception of January 13-14-17-22, making a total of 29 below zero days out of 33. Of those below zero days, five fell between -20 and -30. 31 degrees below zero was the coldest mark registered, that being January 25. This -31 is the second lowest temperature on record at the Bureau. On February 16, 1943, the reading and record low was -32. Other cold periods of exception in the bureau’s history occurred in January, 1942 and 1943, February in 1944, but all were of short duration.
