Class offered for soccer refs

CARIBOU, Maine — A local course will be offered in March for those who would like to become a United States Soccer Federation referee.

The course will gain you official certification and will allow you to referee all games played under USSF rules. There are different requirements if you would like to referee either high school or college games.

The course is being offered at the Caribou Middle School from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 25, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 26.

The course will cover the rules of the game, the mechanics of how to referee, the equipment you will need and how to get your assignments. This cost for the starting level course is $115.

Club soccer is mainly in the spring and fall, and the games are played locally. Referees are paid per game; the amount depends on the age group and place in the referee team. There will be opportunities, as referees become more experienced, to go up in level and to do more challenging games further afield.
