ST. AGATHA, Maine — As if an undefeated regular season and a quarterfinal playoff win weren’t enough to celebrate, Wisdom High School athlete Lilly Roy also earned a spot in the exclusive 1,000th basketball point scorers club.
Roy, who is just a junior in high school, sank the milestone basket during a game on Thursday, Feb. 9 in her home gym.
“I needed three points. I made a three-pointer in the first minute of the game,” Roy said. “I was super excited when I received this milestone. The best part was seeing my team running up to me just as excited as I was.”
Consistently turning in buckets is becoming a family tradition. Roy’s stepbrother, Carter Pelletier, also joined the 1,000-point club last year while playing for the Pioneer boys.
Roy credits her team, coaches and family for her success.
“They have always motivated and supported me. My favorite thing about playing basketball is being part of a team. We are such a close team and trust each other. I think that is a big part of what adds to our success,” Roy said.
Wisdom girls coach Scott Pelletier described Roy as “nothing short of amazing.”
“I knew she was special from the moment I met her,” Pelletier said.
Pelletier said that even as an eighth-grader Roy immediately had an impact on the team.
“When we played Shead in the tournament at Bangor her eighth-grade year, she hit big shots and hit a three late in the game to tie it,” Pelletier said.
Roy is also coachable and has a strong work ethic, according to Pelletier.
“She has accomplished so much and in a quiet manner. She is humble and everything she does is for her team,” Pelletier said. “She averaged 24 points a game this season and will have a big impact in our team’s success moving forward.”
Roy also plays on the Wisdom soccer, volleyball, and softball teams. She is a member of the National Honor Society, athletic club, student council and is her class president.
Her parents are Jonathan Roy and Michelle Roy.
