115 Years Ago – Mar. 12, 1908
New occupants — The store recently occupied by Miss Evelyn Smith as a millinery store next door to the post office is being remodeled and will be occupied some time next month by the American Express Company.
A place to go for auto repairs — F. H Hartt of Boston has rented a portion of S. P. Jordan’s shop on Washburn Street and has opened a garage where he will repair all different makes of automobiles.
A change of jobs — Nels Landin, at one time ‘devil’ in the Republican office, has purchased a farm in New Sweden and will now engage in picking up potatoes instead of picking up type. We wish Nels all manner of success.
100 Years Ago – Mar. 15, 1923
New owner — Quite a business transaction took place during the past week when Chas. T. Bishop became the owner of the Caribou Hardware Co., buying the interests of J. B. Lyons and H. F. Bragdon, Mr. Lyons having previously purchased the interests of N. A. Smith.
In town for orders — Geo. H. Tower, representing the C. M. Rice Paper Co. of Portland, was in town Thursday, Friday and Saturday soliciting orders for his firm. About 15 years ago, Mr. Tower was a traveling salesman for the Mergenthaler Linotype Co., and quite proficient on the keyboard. Being aware of the fact, and realizing that we needed all the help we could possibly get, we commandeered his service for several hours last Thursday while the regular operator, L. K. Fisher was running the cylinder press, printing The Republican.
75 Years Ago – Mar. 11, 1948
CHS students visit factory — The students of the Caribou public schools recently made a visit to the plant of the Maine Potato Bag Company, Ralph W. Allen, manager, stated today, in order to study at first hand the processes involved in the manufacture of burlap and paper bags.The fist of these to visit the plant were composed of two groups of high school students numbering about 75 from the social science class. These students, under the supervision of Nancy Pierce, visit the factory every year about this time.
Local couple honored on 40th anniversary — Mr. and Mrs. Joseph P. Bouchard were pleasantly surprised recently with a party in honor of their 40th wedding anniversary. The party was given by friends and relatives at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Sirois. Charlemagne was played during the evening. First prize for the ladies was won by Mrs. Robert Blanchette and consolation was awarded to Mrs. Guy Violette. Prize was won by Sam Albair for the men and consolation was given to Joseph St. Peter. The honored couple received many lovely gifts including a sum of money. A buffet lunch was served including a wedding cake.
25 Years Ago – Mar. 18, 1998
Nadeau is BPW District Young Careerist — Laura Nadeau of Caribou has been selected the Business and Professional Women’s District Young Careerist for 1998. Nadeau competed for the title on March 14 at the Spring District meeting held at Northern Maine Technical College. She will represent the county at the BPW state convention in Sunday River where she will compete for the state title. The state winner will travel to Orlando, Fla. for the National Convention in July. Nadeau, 26, is the admissions representative at the University of Maine, at Presque Isle. She resides in Caribou with her husband Andy.
Essay contest winners — Amanda Brooker and Dana Bishop were winners in the Abraham Lincoln essay contest at Limestone Community School. They were presented savings bonds at the recent banquet held to honor the first Republican president.
