National Guard Open House On Army Day – Battery B, 152nd F.A. Bn. Maine National Guard will hold an Open House in its Armory at the Houlton Municipal Airport April 6 in observance of Army Day, it was reported by Sgt. Hugh Stearns of the U.S. Army and U. S. Air Force Recruiting Station. Captain George Bagnall, commanding officer of the Battery, says that the Armory will be open all day and the public is invited to visit.
VFW Team Wins Play-Off For Recreation Title – At the conclusion of the regular bowling schedule in February, the two top teams in each of the three recreation leagues bowled a round-robin tournament for the championship. In this tournament the V.F.W., Elks and ANderson’s tied. Last Thursday evening these three teams met to decide the winner. Each team bowled five strings with the winner based on total pinball. The V.F.W. bowled a grand total of 2534, the Elks 2527, and the Anderson’s 2470. A great deal of credit goes to the V.F.W. as they were a second place team in their league at the end of the regular bowling schedule.

Hardy Assigned By Air Force To Alaska Base – U.S. Air Force Sergeant Timothy F. Hardy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Basil J. Suitter of Houlton, has arrived for duty at Eielson AFB, Fairbanks, Alaska. Sgt. Hardy, a pavement maintenance specialist, is assigned to a unit of the Alaskan Air Command which guards the Arctic air approaches to North America. He previously served at Dyess AFB, Tex. The sergeant attended Houlton High School prior to entering the Air Force in 1970.

Veteran Shiretown squad eyes playoffs – The Houlton Shiretown baseball team under the direction of Coach Rob Kinens is a veteran laden team, with their sights set on a playoff berth. “There is a general consensus that we are capable of earning a spot in the playoffs,” Kinens said. “And, if we reach our potential, perhaps hosting a game.” Last season, the Shires were sixth in Eastern Maine Class B, with a record of 11-5. In the playoffs, the team bowed to a strong Hermon squad, 14-8.
Pilot killed in County plane crash – Federal officials arrived in Aroostook County for the second time in two months to investigate Friday’s crash of a twin-engine mail plane that killed the pilot and destroyed or damaged dozens of pieces of mail. The plane, a 1974 Smith Aerostar 600, took off from the Northern Maine Regional Airport in Presque Isle shortly after 6:40p.m. Witnesses said the plane banked left as it climbed to 200 to 300 feet above the runway before diving nose first into a marsh between the runway and Hanson Lake. The plane exploded on impact.
