Over the winter, Lions Clubs International sent recognition awards to three members of the Mapleton Lions Club.
Adam Nicak was recognized for 10 years of membership and his work on many projects such as holiday street lighting, Mapleton Daze chicken barbecue, Northern Maine Fair booth and several other projects. He is on the club’s board of directors and serves as membership chair.
The second honor went to Matt Gregg for 15 years as a member and being a current director. Gregg has been at the Lions Den food booth at the Northern Maine Fair. He worked on many projects, but has become a standout leading the club’s annual fundraising auction. Because he is an experienced auctioneer, he has been teaching club members how to run both an in-person and an online fundraising auction.
The club under his leadership will conduct its 61st annual auction as a hybrid event. The auction will run online until shortly before its in-person date of June 2. Club members are now soliciting items and taking cash donations.
The funds from this auction are used to fund the club’s charities, which include: college scholarships, purchase of eyeglasses, hosting the Mapleton Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony and Parade, holiday street lighting, supporting the Mapleton Recreation Program, Presque Isle Middle School students’ trip to Washington, D.C., hunger and reading telethons, Homeless Services of Aroostook, Project Graduation and the Aroostook Teen Leadership Camp.
Terry Sandusky was awarded for his 40 years of service to the Lions Club and his community. He has served as club director and president and has been the club’s secretary for the past 24 years. He is a member of the Lions District 41 Leadership Team as a zone chair, working with other clubs in the area.
He chaired the Mapleton Club’s annual auction for 15 years and represents the club on the Crown of Maine Balloon Fest Committee. He works on the club’s many projects and handles publicity to inform the public of upcoming events. He is the second longest active member of the club.
Supper rescheduled
The Chapman Ridge Riders Snowmobile Club postponed their potluck supper, originally scheduled for April 15. The supper will now be held at 6 p.m. this Saturday, April 29.
This member supper is the club’s first potluck scheduled for members since beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. All members are encouraged to come and support the club and are asked to invite guests who may be interested in joining. A short meeting will follow the supper, but overall this supper is a time to thank all the volunteers who have cared for the club or worked on trail grooming.

ATV riders take notice
ATV riders, remember that ATV trails are not open until the end of May. The official date will be posted. When ATV riders go on soft trails before they are officially open, clubs run the risk of landowners closing the trails to ATV traffic due to damages caused by riding on soft, wet and muddy trails.
Disappointing as this sounds, there are always a few riders who go on the trails before they are open, which cancels out expensive bulldozing and ditching workers do to prepare the ground for all users.
