BANGOR, Maine – The Houlton track and field team competed in its first regular season meet of the year hosted by Bangor High School at the new Cameron Stadium, with impressive results to show for the efforts.
Despite only having seven team members, the girls claimed an outstanding third place finish out of 11 schools in attendance, narrowly missing second place by just eight points. The team’s performance was a testament to their hard work and dedication, and highlights the talent and potential of Houlton/GHCA’s student-athletes.
Event wins went to the girl’s 4x800m team composed of Teanne Ewings, Natalie Johnson and sisters Andrea and Leanne Ross. Their time was the fifth fastest by a 4×800 team in the state this weekend and the first overall in Class C. Ewings would go on for the clean sweep in the distance events as she took home first in the 800, 1,600, and 3,200 races, her 800 and 1,600 times were the fastest by a high school girl in the state this weekend, with her 3,200 being second in the state.
Johnson would add in second place points for the 1,600 and 3,200 and third place for the 800, she too would find her way into the state top 10 at fifth for her 3,200 performance. In the boys’ meet we saw freshman James Brady rising up in his first ever varsity meet to score eight points, six from his third place in the 3,200 and two from fifth in the 1,600. He also had top 10 finishes in the javelin (eighth) and 800 (10th). Also grabbing top 10 places but falling just shy of scoring positions were Landon Lafferriere’s 400 (10th) and Gavin Wright in shot put (ninth).
Several new personal bests were set by the boys, and Ethan Casale managed to hit new PR’s in each of his events. “The team’s performance was truly remarkable, and we couldn’t be more proud of their efforts,” said coach Chris Rines. “We are excited to see how our student-athletes continue to develop and compete throughout the season. Bangor has a really nice brand new facility here at Cameron Stadium and we are looking forward to coming back next week.”
The team will look to build on the impressive performance as athletes continue their regular season schedule. They will be back at Cameron Stadium next Saturday, April 29, and then spend the next three weeks after that in the county with two Caribou meets and the Aroostook League Championship in Presque Isle.
