100 Years Ago – May 17, 1923
Presque Isle High School defeated A. C. I. — Presque Isle High School defeated A. C. I. in a one-sided game by a score of 2403. The A. C. I. team was composed of green men, which accounted for the one-sided score. The PIHS team was somehow crippled also, owing to the absence of Gagnon who left school to accept a position in Van Buren, and Paul took up the burden.
75 Years Ago – May 13, 1948
Williams elected A.A.U.W. president — Mrs. Beulah L. Williams was elected president of the Presque Isle Branch of the American Association of University Women for the year 1948-49. Mrs. Williams took office succeeding Mrs. Jerre Cooper, the club’s first president. In the absence of Mrs. Cooper, Mrs. Gaile Parent had been acting president. A graduate of Colby College and former history teacher in Presque Isle High school, Mrs. Williams was head of the International Relations Group of the Pierian club the previous year. She had been program chairman of the Training School Parent-Teacher Association and was active in the Community Concert Association.
Treffery elected president of the ARoostook County Fire Chiefs Association — Herbert F. Treffery, chief of the Presque Isle Fire Department, was elected president of the Aroostook County Fire Chiefs Association at its annual meeting the previous week. Lewis Benn of Easton was named vice president and George Black of EAstone, secretary-treasurer.
Presque Isle’s finest — The Presque Isle Police Department, headed by Watson E. Burlock, who was recently promoted to chief of the department, included Sgt. Dana Brewer; Patrolmen, John McNaughton, William Foster, Harold Sharp, and Sylvanus Davis.
50 Years Ago – May 16, 1973
Mabel Huson honored by senior citizens — The Senior Citizens Club of Easton honored its oldest member, Mrs. Mabel Huson, on her 91st birthday at a luncheon in their club room at the Oddfellows Hall. Twenty-seven members and relatives were present. Following the luncheon, a short program was enjoyed consisting of group singing led by Irene Delano and Eunice Kelly of Fort Fairfield, two solos by Irene Delano and reading members. The birthday cake was made by Stella Dinsmore. Mrs. Huson received gifts, flowers and money presented by her son, Oscar Huson, president of the club. She also received many congratulations on attaining her 91st birthday and on being so active and alert.
Two received arts degrees — Gail J. Allen of Presque Isle and Wanda M. Carmichael of Washburn graduated from St. Joseph’s College, North Windham, at the commencement exercises held on May 13. Both received a Bachelor of Science degree in Professional Arts. The program in Professional Arts was a new one-year course of studies designed especially for registered nurses who had graduated from a three-year nursing program.
25 Years Ago – May 20, 1998
Donation — The Maine Veterans Home (MVH) in Caribou received a $2,500 donation from the members of American Legion Post 109 of Ashland. Those present were Nancy Fay, director of nursing, MVH; Steve Gaudette, chairman, MVH Board of Trustees; Ivan Porter, commander of American Legion Post 109 of Ashland; Carl McGlauflin, county commander, a member of American Legion Post 88 of Presque Isle; Ray Guerette, chairman of the MVH Liaison Committee in Caribou; and Dick Blanchard from Post 88 of Presque Isle; Raymond Perry, finance officer of the American Legion Post 109 of Ashland; Peter Miesburger, member of the Board of Trustees for the MVH in Caribou; Burns Weeks, adjutant for the Southern Aroostook County American Legion. The first resident admitted to the Maine Veterans Home was a member of the American Legion Post 109, Mr. Owen Robinson.
Honored citizens — Erin Benson presented Steve and Lucy Richard with a plaque honoring them as Citizens of the Year for Presque Isle at a banquet May 7 at the Northeastland Hotel.
Lifetime accomplishments — Bill Smythe presented Roger Hoffses with the Lifetime Achievement Award at a banquet May 7 at the Northeastland Hotel.
