Annual youth fishing derby scheduled for Saturday

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — In preparation for the Presque Isle Elks “Hooked on Fishing, Not Drugs” youth fishing derby, the Enfield hatchery of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and  Wildlife, on Thursday, June 1 will stock Mantle Lake in Presque Isle with 500 8- to 11-inch long trout.

The 23rd annual fishing derby will be held on Saturday, June 3. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. and will continue until 10 a.m. that Saturday morning. The fishing derby will conclude at noon.

The fishing derby is open to all youth from 3 to 16 years old. Every registering young angler must be accompanied by a responsible, supervising adult.  

The registered young angler who catches the longest fish can win a lifetime fishing  license donated by the Presque Isle Fish and Game Club. Every registered fishing  contestant will win an outdoor activity prize of their choice.  

Adults accompanying a registered young angler will be eligible to win a weekend stay at a lakeside cabin donated by Macannamac Camps or a season pass donated by the North Maine Woods, Inc.  

For any youth desiring to fish but without a fishing pole of their own, a beginner’s fishing rod and reel will be given to the youth to keep for future fishing. Worms for use as bait will once again be provided by Moosehead Bait and Tackle of Rockwood.  

Grilled hot dogs, chips, juice, Houlton Farms Dairy ice cream, and water will be served. Everything is provided free of charge by the Presque Isle Elks, Lodge #1954, and its sponsors.
