100 Years Ago – June 14, 1923
Dr. Mann was president elect — Houlton and Aroostook County was honored Thursday when Dr. Fred W. Mann was chosen President-elect of the Maine Medical Society. This means the election of President in 1924.
The selection of Dr. Mann was unanimous on the part of every delegate of the convention. The election of Dr. Mann was due not because Houlton entertained the Association, but because of the intrinsic qualities possessed by Dr. Mann for this high office.
75 Years Ago – June 10, 1948
Rotary honored Dr. Doble — The Presque Isle Rotary club at its regular meeting, Monday noon, gave special recognition to Dr. Eugene H. Doble for outstanding service to the community over a period of nearly half a century. Frank A. Smith, Jr., program chairman for the day, presented a special certificate of service to Dr. Doble. The citation read as follows: “The Presque Isle Rotary awards this certificate to Dr. E. H. Doble for outstanding social service rendered from 1900 to 1948 in this community.” Fred P. Stevens, secretary of the club, inducted the following new members: Fred N. Beak, Norman W. MacDonald, Harry K. Parks, and W. S. Thompson Jr.
Rowe was elected Lions President — Eugene K. Rowe was elected president of the Presque Isle Lions club at the annual election Thursday evening in the Northeastland hotel. Rowe, who came to Presque Isle from Augusta in 1946, was the editor of the Star-Herald and had served as a vice-president of the Lions club during the previous year. He was also vice-president of the Presque Isle Community chest and a member of the board of the Girl Scout Council.
50 Years Ago – June 13, 1973
New phone office — The Presque Isle office of the New England Telephone Company sponsored a mid-morning gathering Monday, June 11, to mark the opening of its new offices on Main Street at the former F. W. Woolworth location. Individuals representing both Presque Isle and the company were present for the occasion. Those present cutting the blue and gold ribbon (the telephone company colors) were Presque Isle City Councilman Ray Lamoreau, Presque Isle Chamber of Commerce President Gene Michaud, NET Vice President William Melville, City Manager Max Buck, NET’s Presque Isle Commercial Manager Peter Beal, City Councilwoman Jean Harding and Perry Hudson, NET general manager for Maine.
Derby winners — Cub Scout troop 179 of Ashland held the Pinewood Derby race during their May 30 meeting at the Fish and Game Club in Ashland. Grand champion of the model car race was Harold Sutherland. Second place went to Harold Poitraw.
25 Years Ago – May 17, 1998
Three local baseball players in the senior all-star game — Two members of the Presque Isle Wildcats and one member of the Fort Fairfield Tigers were selected to the East team roster for the 1998 Senior All Star Baseball Classic, played at Mahaney Diamond at the University of Maine at Orono. Marc Wood and Matt Allen, both of the Wildcats, and Peter Solomon of the Tigers, earned spots on the 25-man roster.
On to victory — Darren Belskis pitched a complete game and struck out 11 along the way to lead Ashland to its first Eastern Maine title in baseball, 8-4 over Fort Fairfield. The Hornets had a hit or an RBI from every player in the starting lineup.
Northern Maine Bowhunters held a tourney — The Northern Maine Bowhunters held a tournament Sunday, with Josh McDougal of Washburn winning the cubs division; Becky Lamb of Chapman, the women’s unlimited category; Sonny Drost Sr. of Washburn, the men’s barebow class; and Ken Lamb of Chapman taking top honor for men’s unlimited.
