115 Years Ago – June 18, 1908
Accepted a new position — Arthur M. Alley, Pharm. D., of Ellsworth, Me., a graduate of the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy of Boston, class of 1908, has accepted a position in the drug store of F. A. Havey.
Who has more cars — The Houlton papers are bragging about there being 22 automobiles in that town, with several more to come. Caribou can just beat the number of machines owned in the shire town, having 23.
100 Years Ago – June 21, 1923
Attended a meeting — Dr. Jane B. W. Hall was in attendance at the meeting of the State Board of Examiners in Osteopathy, for the examination of applicants for Maine licenses to practice Osteopathy, of which she is a member, last Tuesday. Hall’s department is that of obstetrics and gynecology, in which she is recognized in osteopathic circles as an expert.
Digging a trench — Dr. F. L. Gregory is having a trench dug from his house to the street, this being necessary in order to repair the sewer and water pipes. And, in passing, we might add that it would be an opportune time for any other residents on that street, who wish to dig open the road, to do so at once, as it is planned to have High street covered with a coat of tarvia in a few weeks.
75 Years Ago – June 17, 1948
Savings-Loan Association to have new fireproof home — Excavation was started early this week on the former Trask lot, adjacent to the Caribou municipal building, where the Aroostook County Federal Savings & Loan Association will construct a modern banking building. The structure, 40 x 46, will be one story, of fireproof construction with brick side walls and Indiana octilic limestone of buff machine finish front. Bunker & Savage, Augusta, are the architects and Consolidated Constructors Inc., Portland, won out over five other firms that entered bids on the project.
Houses being moved — Homar Ward of Limestone is moving two houses this week, one for W. K. Fenelason, known as the Bill Chapman house. Mr. Fenelason will have it taken down to his farm. John Irish will have the small house now occupied by Fred Drost, known as the house owned by George Watson. That will be moved on a vacant lot on his farm, as the Government has taken that piece of land.
25 Years Ago – Jan. 4, 1998
Recently retired — The Caribou Department of Human Services recently said farewell to Mrs.Gloria Knox who retired with more than 29 years state service on May 31. Mr. Glyn Lovely, regional ASPIRE manager, Mr. Jerry McCarthy, regional program manager, presented the Legislative Expressions of Sentiment which were provided by State Sen. Leo Kieffer and State Representative Irwin Belanger.
Whitson promoted — Laurie Whitson of the Aroostook Mental Health Center (AMHC), Caribou Outpatient Office, has been promoted to the Community Support Program as supervisor. Whitson joined the agency in 1997 as an outpatient therapist. Whitson takes on her responsibilities June 1 and says she is looking forward to the challenge.
