FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — Within four days, Fort Fairfield police arrested three people for allegedly possessing illegal drugs.
The arrests are the latest in a “stark increase” in calls involving people under the influence of or in possession of drugs, Fort Fairfield Police Chief Matthew Cummings said.
Earlier this month, three people were arrested for two separate incidents of alleged drug trafficking in one day.
“Since mid-May we have made nine arrests of drivers who have been under the influence of alcohol, drugs and other impairing substances,” Cummings said.
After a traffic stop on Limestone Road on Tuesday, officers found the vehicle’s passenger, Brianna Berry, 30, of Van Buren, had violated bail conditions because she was not home during a designated curfew, he said.
An investigation by a U.S. Border Patrol K-9 unit found fentanyl powder among Berry’s personal items, Cummings said.
Berry was arrested and charged with violating conditions of release and unlawful possession of scheduled drugs. She was held at Caribou Police Department before being transported to Aroostook County Jail in Houlton.
Berry had previously been arrested in Caribou and charged with possession of fentanyl in March.
On Friday, U.S. Border Patrol agents detained a vehicle driven by Taylor Boxwell, 27, of Presque Isle. Agents and Fort Fairfield police later arrested and charged Boxwell with operating under the influence of drugs with priors, unlawful possession of heroin and unlawful possession of methamphetamine.
Tyler Maynard, 34, of Presque Isle was a passenger in Boxwell’s vehicle and allegedly tried giving a false name to law enforcement, noted Cummings.
Maynard was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of heroin, unlawful possession of methamphetamine, unsworn falsification and violating conditions of release for prior unrelated arrest warrants.
Boxwell and Maynard are being held at Caribou Police Department.
