The community’s year-long fight brightened considerably this week in 1973, when Congressman William Cohen announced that the General Services Administration will investigate the feasibility of a new customs and immigration facility within the next year.

Action on the outmoded facility, built in the early 1930s, has been sought ever since last summer by Town Manager Claude Dumond, who has been spearheading the campaign.

Record breaking ploye feeds many — It took an army of volunteers to prepare, cook and serve the giant ploye prepared last week in 1998 at High View Manor. The finished product measured a staggering 8 feet, 1/4 inch across and defied any attempts at removal. The ploye broke the existing record held by Edmundston’s Foire Brayonne. It remains to be seen if Edmundston plans a similar feat for the festival.

Legion pride — Duane Belanger and Legion Post Chaplain Reggie Deschaine looked at World War I artifacts on display during the 90th Anniversary Open House hosted by American Legion Martin-Klein Post 133 in Fort Kent on a Sunday in 2013. Along with the artifacts, visitors were treated to hamburgers, hot dogs and cake. The post received a flag from Susan Collins’ representative.
