Sixteen From Houlton Area At U. Of M. Workshops – Approximately 200 teachers and school administrators have registered for workshops in elementary and secondary education at the University of Maine. Patten Nips Island Falls For So. Aroostook Win – A ninth-inning rally by the locals here yesterday added up to a Southern Aroostook League win over Island Falls, 5-4. Pond’s pinch single, with one out in the last of the ninth, scored the inning’s second run to post the win. Henry Hotham had a four-for-four day for the winners as Herbie Cox zeroed in the fences with a double and a triple for the losers. Wes Giles pitched brilliantly in relief to score his second league win over the Fallsmen. Hathaway was struck in the face by a batted ball during Patten’s ninth-inning rally and was replaced by versatile Mike Harrison.

Sylvester Joins Barnes In Law Firm Partnership – Torrey A. Sylvester, a 1970 graduate of the University of Maine School of Law and a former Lieutenant Commander in the US Navy, has formed a law partnership with Forrest Barnes. They are located in the Barnes Law Office on the second floor of the Houlton Trust Company building. A native of Houlton, Mr. Sylvester graduated from Houlton High School in 1954 and from the University of Maine at Orono in 1959. He served five and a half years in the Navy, and then was with Dead River Company as manager in the Petroleum and Recreation Divisions for three years before entering law school in 1967. Following law school he practiced as a trial attorney for three years in Bangor with the firm of Rudman, Rudman and Carter. His new law partnership with Mr. Barnes became effective June 1.
Houlton Golf – The Scotch Foursome held July 18 at the Houlton Community Golf Club was a smashing success. Jim Williams and Mame London walked off as winners of a field of 64 players, with a superior score of 27.

Monticello girls end season, players earn special awards – The Monticello Junior Girl’s softball Team recently completed another successful season with the third annual Mother-Daughter softball game and awards night. Following the rather entertaining game, the year-end awards were presented. Coach Holck told the large crowd that he was very proud of the team and what they have been able to accomplish during the season, as well as the last two summers. “This is a very special group of girls. Ten of these girls have been together for three summers. During that time, the team became the first one to ever capture the Aroostook County Tournament for three straight years,” Holck said. “They have won six tournaments and an amazing 53 out of 57 contests. The Town of Monticello can be very proud of them.”
