Customs house action nears – Hopes for a new custom house in Fort Kent moved a little closer to reality this week in 1973. Congressman Bill Cohen’s office informed the Times that the GSA had reacted favorably to the possibility of a new border facility in Fort Kent. Cohen stated: “I have been informed by GSA that the U.S. Bureau of Customs, U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service and GSA preliminary study indicates the need for a new border inspection facility.

Mother of the year — Mrs. Azilda Leonard of Grand Isle, Maine was selected as the Mother of the Year, by the ladies of St. Anne in St. Gerard’s Parish. Mrs. Leonard has three children, nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Chamber hires new Executive Director – Gerry Robinson has been hired recently to fill the position of executive director for the Greater Fort Kent Area Chamber of Commerce.

Improving Madawaska one lot at a time — Wayne Cyr of Madawaska mowed tall grass on Thursday, July 18, 2013 at the former Madawaska Regional Health Center business lot at 188 Main St., now owned by the United States government, according to Bob Ouellet, code enforcement officer. Cyr mows voluntarily with his own lawnmower in an effort to “beautify Madawaska.”
