75 years ago – August 12, 1948
Oakfield in Lead With Patten Win – Rollie Crandalls’ bases-loaded double in the sixth proved the margin of victory as Oakfield bested Patten 4 to 3 in the season’s best local game here today. Roger Greenlay and 1st Sacker Goodall with seven hits between them led the attack for the winners as Wilson starred defensively with an exceptionally fine unassisted double play and had two for four at bat for the losers. The win leaves the Oakies virtually assured of an undefeated league season.
Robinson Transferred To New York Office – A. E. Robinson, Radioman at the Transatlantic Radio Telephone Station located on the County Road will be transferred to the New York office early in September. Mr. Robinson, who has been employed as Radioman at the Houlton Station, which is operated by the Overseas Division of the American Tel. & Tel. Co., will assume his new position as technical assistant in the District Office of the Overseas Division located in New York City. Since joining the staff of the American Tel. and Tel. company in April of 1928, Mr. Robinson was stationed at Houlton Station except for periods of special training and assignments.
50 Years ago – August 15, 1972
Work Begun On Army’s New Home – Groundbreaking ceremonies for the new County headquarters of the Salvation Army were conducted Monday morning and the contractor was scheduled to begin with preparation today. The new headquarters will be located on the old Exchange parking lot on Court Street, and the project is being financed by a $200,000 County-wide fund campaign now underway. The new building is scheduled to be completed by mid- October, with occupancy by November 1.
White Promoted To AF Rank of Staff Sergeant – John R. White, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mark E. White of Houlton, has been promoted to staff sergeant in the U. S. Air Force. Sgt. White is a radio relay equipment repairman at Aviano AB, Italy. He is a member of the Air Force Communications Service. The sergeant, a 1966 graduate of Houlton High School, received his AAS degree from Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute.

Lifeflight receives licensing approval – LifeFlight of Maine, the state’s new medical helicopter service, has received approval of its license application. The Maine EMS board formally and unanimously approved an operating license Aug. 5.
Enlist in the Air Force – Mark C. Whited of HOulton, and Shona L. Ireland of Haynesville, recently enlisted in the Air Force’s Delayed Enlistment Program. A 1998 graduate of Hodgdon High School, Whited is scheduled to attend Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, on August 26th. A 1994 graduate of Hodgdon High School, Ireland is scheduled to attend Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonino, Texas, on April 29, 1999. They will earn credits toward an Associate Degree in Applied Sciences through the Community College of the Air Force upon completion of basic training and technical training school.
