50 Years Ago — Aug. 16, 1973

  SAD 27 enrollment dips – Enrollment in SAD 27 schools continues to decline sharply. Superintendent Paul Kelly revealed this week that enrollment for the 1973-74 school year showed a drop of 102 students. This year’s enrollment is 2,443 compared to last year’s opening total of 2,545. 

25 Years Ago — Aug. 12, 1998

Puppy love — Nine Golden Labrador pups were left motherless at 10 days old after their mother died of pregnancy complications. Owner Paula Hartman of Fort Kent said a multitude of friends, neighbors and dog lovers took turns bottle feeding, cleaning and cuddling with the pups. All nine puppies went visiting Forest Hill Manor in a little red wagon, where they received a heavy dose of love. At six weeks, two days the pups were placed in their respective adoptive homes.

10 Years Ago — Aug. 14, 2013 

Fourth donation for Jayde Violette — Miss Pre-Teen Van Buren 2013, 10 year-old Jayde Ashlee Violette, donated 9.5 inches of her hair on Aug. 3, 2013, to the “Pantene Beautiful Lengths” program. The program is a partnership between Pantene and the American Cancer Society. Donated hair is made into free, real-hair wigs for women with cancer. The wigs are then distributed to cancer patients across the country.
