50 Years Ago — August 23, 1973

  Seniors enjoy a day at Zayre’s – The Van Buren seniors participated in the recent Senior Day at Zayre’s store in Madawaska. A good number attended and enjoyed their day. Wednesday’s activities at the senior center at Borderview Nursing Home brought twenty five seniors together to help celebrate the birthday of Mrs. Edna Cyr. A gift was presented to her on behalf of the club and they all joined in wishing her a ‘Happy Birthday.’ 

25 Years Ago — August 26, 1998

Farm of the year — The Charette family farm, located on South Perley Brook Road in Fort Kent is the Valley’s SWCD Farm of the Year. The Charette family was awarded with a sign denoting the acknowledgement for 1998. Dale and Diane Charette, with their children Dustin and Sonya raise beef, grow oats and make their own hay. Of the farm’s 250 acres, 140 are wooded, 30 are grazing land for the beef, and the rest is tillable. There are gardens, and the Charettes have approximately 150 chickens and four horses.

10 Years Ago — August 28, 2013 

New port facility in Van Buren in operation — The newly-built U.S. port of entry in Van Buren is now running, with exit signage erected to guide drivers out into downtown Van Buren, or back into Canada, once they have gone through Customs. The port is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The former building that housed the Customs office has been removed.
