Odd Fellows Win Title In Softball Playoff – The Odd Fellows won the softball playoff title Friday evening by defeating Dunns 15-12. It was only two weeks ago that these two teams met to decide the League championship. In this game, Dunns won to give them the League title and the permanent trophy. Following the league play the top four teams, Dunns, Odd Fellows, Comets and K. of C., entered an elimination tournament for the playoff championship. In the preliminary games Dunns won over the Comes 6 to 2 and the Odd Fellows defeated the K. of C., 21 to 7.

Eight Students From Area Earn Degrees at UMO – Eight students from the Southern Aroostook area were among those to receive degrees during the 148th commencement exercises of the University of Maine at Orono. Receiving their bachelor degrees were Margaret Marie Rutledge of Houlton from the college of arts and sciences; Marion Edythe Brown of Oakfield and Stephen Lee McDonald of Sherman Mills, from the college of education, and Byron Eugene Lockhart of Westfield from the college of arts and sciences. Receiving their graduate degrees were Arthur Lawrence Greaney and Evelyn Joan Putnam of Houlton, Nelson Arlington Pryor of Bridgewater, and Douglas Arthur Bradshaw of Smyrna Mills. This was the first reunion held in 50 years and it was voted to hold another one next year.
O’Donnel Takes Navy Course At Boiler School – Navy Fireman Recruit Phillip J. O’Donnel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald J. O’Donnel of Houlton, has completed basic boiler Technician School at Great Lakes, Ill. A boiler technician operates marine boilers and related boiler room machinery aboard ships and at shore stations. He also tests and measures water and ful used in boilers.

Lady Warriors look for win – The Southern Aroostook Lady Warriors soccer team is still looking for its win of the season. Their 0-6 record can be deceiving even though Monday’s contest wasn’t indicative of the whole season.
LifeFlight comes to Shiretown – Houlton was introduced to the new LifeFlight of Maine air ambulance service, which will be available to Aroostook County soon. Sue Wardwell, critical care coordinator for Meridian Health, led the presentation. She explained the history, functions and details of the service to hospital emergency treatment personnel.
