75 Years Ago September 2, 1948

Houlton Town Band Wins Woodstock Competition – The Houlton Town Band carried away honors Thursday night in the band contest held in connection with Old Home Week celebration at Woodstock. In the class A competition, Houlton obtained 97 points out of a possible 100 while the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce Band obtained 95 points. Other bands competed in various classification including the Woodstock and the Grand Falls bands. 

Dewey DeWitt Retains Houlton Tennis Title– Dewey DeWitt again took top honors in the annual adult tennis tournament sponsored by the Recreation Department. In the tournament finals Sunday afternoon. DeWeitt defeated Otis Putnam three sets out of four to remain the tennis champ of Houlton. Putnam won the first set 6-0 but dropped three straight 6-2, 6-3, and 6-4. 

50 Years Ago September 5, 1973

Houlton Native Joins Law Firm In Philadelphia –  Theodore W. Mason, a native of Houlton and a graduate of Houlton High School in 1961, has joined the law firm of Ballard, Spahr, Andrews and Ingersoll in Philadelphia, Pa.  Mr. Mason is also a graduate of Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He was an officer in the United States Navy for four years. 

Miller Receives Air Force Badge As Parachutist – Second Lieutenant Dale B. Miller, Son of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice R. Miller of Houlton, has received a parachutist badge upon completion of the three week airborne course in the U.S. Army Infantry School, Ft. Benning, GA. 

25 years Ago September 23, 1998

Troopers break ground at site of new barracks – Ground was officially broken last Friday at the site of the new Maine State Police Troop F barracks in Houlton. However, it’s somewhat familiar ground as the new 15,000 square-foot, two-story building

 Will be located behind the current barracks. Following construction, the existing structure will be torn down. Members of the Maine State police, location politicians and Gov. Angus S. King Jr. was on hand to attend the groundbreaking ceremony. All were very excited about the prospects of the new police barracks. 

HHS golfers end season – The Houlton High School golf team closed out the season topping Fort Fairfield, 183-220 and Limestone, 165-234 in medal play, while bowing to Madawaska, 187-202. Houlton’s Trevor Adams was medalist against Fort Fairfield with a 39, while Gabe Goodwin claimed the honor against Limestone, shooting a 39, as well.
