Wintergreen launches outdoor learning program for toddlers and preschoolers

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — In September, Wintergreen is launching SAPLINGS, a nature-inspired, parent-child outdoor learning program for toddlers and preschoolers in central Aroostook County.

Starting Sept. 20, parents and little ones are invited to join Erin Marquis, Wintergreen’s outdoor-learning and video production teacher, on Wednesday mornings from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Mantle Lake Park in Presque Isle for SAPLINGS, a parent-child outdoor learning time.

“Our hands-on curriculum focuses on STEAM principles,” explains Marquis. “Our goal is to provide experiences for children to thrive in the beauty of nature while nurturing curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning.”

Marquis developed the SAPLINGS program to foster a deep connection to nature through science expeditions, engineering adventures, artistic explorations, and mathematical marvels.

“When Erin approached us with the concept for SAPLINGS, we were immediately on board,” said Dottie Hutchins, Wintergreen’s executive director. “Erin has a strong connection with young people and a deep love for the out-of-doors, so I know she will create amazing experiences for families through SAPLINGS.”

More information about the program and cost is found on Wintergreen’s website, wintergreenarts.org.
