75 Years Ago September 16, 1948

$170,000 Plant For Water Co. – Ground was broken this week for a new 1,000-kilowatt Diesel electric generating plant for the Houlton Water Company which will have an estimated cost of $170,000. The plant will be located in the vicinity of Smyrna street and County road. Announcement was made this noon by the Houlton Water Company that the firm of Fay, Spofford and Thorndike has been retained as consulting engineers and that Frank Lincoln, formerly of Houlton Water Company’s plant project. Another member of the engineering firm is John Ayer.

Four Houlton Boys Join Regular Army –  Four Houlton boys who have grown up together and three other Houlton youths enlisted in various branches of the Armed Services last week at the Houlton Recruiting Station, M/Sgt. Hugh M. Stearns, N.C.O. in charge, stated. The four comrades, all of whom chose the Far East Command of the regular Army, unassigned are: Paul W. Lycette, son of Sheriff and Mrs. Jasper . Lycette; Harold Astle, Willard A. Putnam, Frederick Greaves. The other enlistees are: Robert W. Bull of Woodstock N. B. who came to Houlton in April and applied for American citizenship so that he could enlist in the U.S. Air Force after he obtained his first papers last month; Donald W. Gagnon, reenlisted in the fifth Infantry; and Lawrence Smith, enlisted in the regular Army. All enlistments were for three years. 

50 Years Ago September 19, 1973

Oakfield Baseball Teams were 28-3 During Season – Two baseball teams representing Oakfield did particularly well this past season, between them winning 28 of 31 games played. Coach Murray Putnam’s Pony League team posted a 15-1 record and with it took the championship of a five team league that played its games in Houlton. Oakfield’s Little League team went 13-2 on the season, and had a team batting average of .346. 

25 Years Ago October 7, 1998

Patten woodworker named WearGuard Hero of the Year– Lynne Doliber of Patten was chosen as Wearguard Hero for 1998. Doliber was chosen, with three others, from over 1000 entries across the nation. Doliber is employed by S.C. Wood Harvesting Co. in Patten.
