PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Presque Isle boys varsity golf team is heading back to Natanis Golf Course to compete for the state and individual championships.

In the regular season, the Wildcats were 12-1 with Grant Stubbs shooting an average of 38.8, along with his teammates Jack Boone averaging 43.6 and Owen MacKinnon averaging 43.9.

This year will mark the Wildcats third straight season of qualifying for the state and individual championships. The Presque Isle boys varsity golf team has won the PVC championship for the last two years under head coach Matt Madore.

“We are a very tight knit group,” Madore said. “These kids have been playing with each other for their entire lives and they are all really close.”

On Sept. 28, the Wildcats played for an opportunity to compete in the state team and individual championships at the state qualifiers at JATO Highlands Golf Course in Lincoln.

The results of the state qualifiers were: Stubbs, 75; MacKinnon, 86; Cooper Boinske, 88; Boone and Wyatt Young, each 89; and Gavin Dunleavy, 91.

Two Presque Isle players attempted to qualify for the state individual championship. Nick Lavigne qualified with an 89 and Ean Roy just missed qualifying by one shot at 91.

Players competing for Presque Isle in the state team championship are Boinske, Boone, Stubbs, MacKinnon, and Young.

Players were paired up for golf matches on a four-person team during the regular season.

The boys varsity golf team will practice in the days leading up to the championship at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro.

The Wildcats will travel to Natanis on Thursday, Oct. 5 in the morning for a practice before the championship match. The Wildcats will tee off for the state team and individual championship on Friday, Oct. 6 in the morning.

Mount Desert Island and Caribou will also be heading to Natanis Golf Course to compete against Presque Isle. Great golf weather is expected for this Friday’s game, Madore said.

Madore won Coach of the Year honors for the second time, and attributes his accolades to his players’ performance on the golf greens.
