Houlton Drops Tough Opener To Stearns Eleven By 13-12 – The Houlton High Shiretowners opened their 1948 football schedule Saturday afternoon by losing a hard fought game to Stearns, 13-12. The game opened with Stearns taking Houlton’s kickoff on their own 40. They ran it back to the forty-five. Both teams went scoreless in the third period and as the fourth period opened Houlton had five yards to go on their fourth down. Smith punted the ball down to the Stearns 15. A penalty against Stearns for five yards put the ball on the ten.
Rev. Lewis Distant, Sherman Mills Pastor, Rejoins Army – The resignation of Rev. Lewis E. Distant, for eight years pastor of the Washburn Memorial Congregational Church at Sherman Mills, has been accepted with regret. Rev. Distant, a reserve officer of the recent war, was called to serve as Chaplain at Fort Banks, Winthrop, Mass. The resignation was effective Sept. 26 with his farewell sermon. Mrs. Distant and three children will remain at the parsonage until November.

Army Reenlistment – Sgt. Tony Holck, who has been stationed in Germany for the past two and a half years with the 2nd Bn. 64th Armored Div., has reenlisted for another tour of duty. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Holck of Houlton.
Navy Seaman – Navy Seaman Recruit Burwell E. Lake, son of Mr and Mrs. Charles M. Lake of Houlton has graduated from recruit training at the Naval Training Center at Great Lakes, Ill.

Firefighter Training facility to be located in Shiretown – Fire departments in Southern Aroostook County and western New Brunswick are joining forces to create an instructional center in the region. The Southern Aroostook Training Facility will be located at Houlton Industrial Park. While the building will be housed in Shiretown, several departments will utilize it. “ “it has since encompassed more departments than southern Aroostook County,” said Houlton Fire Chief Milton Cone. “It’s becoming international in scope. Officials are looking at constructing a three-story, concrete building at the Tom Willard site at the park. The training facility will include a burn building which will give firefighters a hands-on learning experience. “I can foresee using the facility for several things,” said Cone. “We could use it to practice confined space rescue, a mock-up for propane fuel fires and vehicle and extrications.
