Free Scottish Country Dancing lessons

HOULTON, Maine — Free ongoing lessons in Scottish Country Dancing will be Mondays 3-5 and 5-7 p.m. and Thursdays 3-5 p.m. in Watson Hall, 116 Main Street behind Church of the Good Shepherd. No experience necessary, no need to bring your own partner.

Scottish Country Dancing is 18th century (and earlier) ballroom dancing, as it was done in Scotland. A bit like contra dancing, only with some basic ballet footwork, and no caller. We learn the individual dances. When a ball comes up — anywhere in the world — the dances that will be danced that night are listed on the ball program, which goes out months in advance so the ball-goers can brush up on or even learn those dances before they dress up and go to the ball.

On Thursday, Nov. 30 to celebrate the patron saint of Scotland, Bulgaria, Greece and several other countries, we’re hosting a potluck St. Andrew’s Day Supper from 3-6 p.m. also in Watson Hall. Admission is a dish to pass. We will dress up and do some Scottish Country Dancing too, of course.
