GRAND ISLE, Maine – A Grand Isle man was hospitalized after being struck by a vehicle near his home on Sunday evening, according to Aroostook County Sheriff Peter Johnson.

The accident occurred at roughly 5:15 p.m. on Sunday on Route 1, or Main Street, in Grand Isle. Matthew Dionne, 29, of Grand Isle was struck by a Grey 2013 Toyota Venza driven by Steven York, 54, of Caribou.

Johnson said the cause of the accident is unclear and the crash is still under investigation. There are no pending criminal charges as of Monday afternoon.

Dionne was transported to Northern Maine Medical Center and then taken to Bangor via life flight.

“I haven’t received any further updates from the family thus far regarding his condition,” Johnson said.

The road was closed until roughly 9 p.m. on Sunday.

Johnson said it is not clear how long the reconstruction and investigation could take. He said in the past, similar investigations have lasted weeks.

In addition to the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office, Madawaska EMS and Grand Isle Fire Department responded to the incident. The Presque Isle Police Department is helping to reconstruct the accident as part of the investigation.
