50 Years Ago — Nov. 21, 1973

  New reporters for WSJR – At the invitation of radio announcer “Bid Daddy” Del Hodgkins, students at Evangeline School in Madawaska became radio weather reporters for W.S.J.R. The local radio station and Madawaska schools in a cooperative effort are making it possible for students to see first hand one of the values of reading, as well as providing the boys and girls a glimpse of the communication industry.

25 Years Ago — Nov. 25, 1998

Talent Queen – Monique Ouellette, daughter of Armand and Deana Ouellette of Van Buren, participated in America Yankee Miss Little Pageant held on Nov. 7, 1998 in Washa, N.H. Twenty-four contestants participated in the pageant. Ouellette was crowned the first Little Miss America Yankee’s talent queen for the New England states. She performed with her ventriloquist doll Little Hovey.

10 Years Ago — Nov. 20, 2013 

Two sisters in their 90s helped celebrate their sister’s 99th — Lena Martin, who will turn 99 on Nov. 29, 2013, celebrated her birthday at the home of her younger sister Leona Lebel, 91, in Fort Kent. Martin’s favorite pastimes are helping to wash clothes, cooking, dancing and other activities at her assisted-living home in Green River, New Brunswick. Their younger sister, Claudia Cyr, 90, who lives at St. Joseph’s Nursing Home in Frenchville, also attended. They are the daughters of Anna Dufour of Madawaska, who gave birth to 18 children and lived to age 97.
