Love being part of The County

To the editor:

Long story short: We live in southeastern Pennsylvania and recently bought a cabin on Drews Lake. How we ended up there is a story in and of itself. Suffice it to say, it was, for me, a dream come true.

My obsession with Maine started at a young age. It might have been the book “Blueberries for Sal” or it might have been the wooden puzzle of the map of the United States, with Maine’s unique shape and location in the easy-to-find, upper righthand corner of our country.  It was always the first state I’d grab out of the box and put in place.

Later in life, my wife humored my ongoing obsession, occasionally buying me a copy of a Maine magazine.  When Zillow became a “thing,” I’d spend far too much time clicking on Maine lake homes for sale and emailing them to her.  At some point, I think she stopped opening them, anticipating that my enthusiasm would wane over time.  It did not.

The good news is that she now shares my weak spot for all things Maine. We subscribe to the Houlton Pioneer Times. I read it cover to cover, albeit a week lagged. All the people we’ve met have been amazing, from neighbors at the lake, to our friends at the County Co-op. Thank you for that. It is the place we always wish we could be, and the place that is the hardest to leave.  The 12- to 14-hour drive up to camp always goes faster than the long drive home.

Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. See you soon.
