HOULTON, Maine — The Aroostook County grand jury handed up 68 indictments for November, including a man accused of causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage to Madawaska’s St. Thomas Aquinas Church.
Randy K. Lavoie, 48, of Madawaska was indicted for burglary, aggravated criminal mischief, criminal mischief and unlawful possession of drugs.
Police arrested Lavoie on Oct. 2 after they received a report of suspicious activity at the church. Madawaska Police Chief Jamie Pelletier later said marble walls, plate glass windows and other sanctuary items were damaged, but the church’s pipe organ received the most significant harm.
Aroostook County District Attorney Todd Collins said it could be a year before investigators determine whether the crime had a hateful motive. The church reopened Nov. 30 with a Mass of reparation led by Bishop Robert Deeley.
An indictment is not a finding of guilt, but an indication that there is enough evidence in a case to move forward with a trial.
