HOULTON, Maine – An Aroostook County man charged in the 2022 death of his infant son pleaded not guilty via a Zoom hearing in Aroostook County Superior Court on Thursday afternoon.
Stanley Hazell, 24, was indicted on one count of manslaughter following a year-long investigation by Maine State Police. If convicted, Hazell could face up to 30 years in jail and a $50,000 fine.
Justice Stephen Nelson said in court that Hazell was charged on allegations that he recklessly and with criminal mischief caused the death of 7-month-old Jackson Hazell on April 8, 2022 in Aroostook County.
The Maine State Medical Examiner ruled that Jackson Hazell’s death was a homicide.
Bail for the Fort Fairfield man was set at a previous hearing at $15,000 cash or $50,000 surety, following Assistant Attorney General Leane Zainea’s recommendation. Hazell currently remains free on bail.
As part of the conditions of his release, Nelson ordered that Hazell not have contact with Julia or Frances Maguire, the baby’s mother and grandmother. Nelson said on Thursday the bail conditions would continue.
No trial date has been set for Hazell.
