Local Girl Named Aroostook Champion Speller in Caribou – Miss Byrna Mae Porter, 16- year-old Houlton High School Junior won the senior spelling contest and became the Aroostook County champion speller for the second straight year at the Caribou Winter Carnival held in the high school Saturday. Miss Porter, who is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar B. Porter was awarded the “Winged Victory” trophy which is offered by Aroostook County weekly newspapers.

Credit Union Elects Hammond As President – Marshall B. Hammond has been elected president of the Houlton Federal Credit Union for the coming year. He will succeed Joseph McGillicuddy, who remains on the board of directors. Elected as Vice President was Christopher J. O’Meara, while Pat Van Ess will be secretary and Gwen Wiggins will continue as treasurer.
Garden Club at Danforth Set For 25th Year – Mrs. Roland Knights, president of the Danforth Garden Club will open the 25th year for the club at its first regular meeting of the year next Tuesday. The group will assemble in the all purpose room of the East Grand School at 7:00 p.m. Guest of honor, and speaker for the evening will be Mrs. Joseph N. Williams of Presque Isle, Aroostook District Director.

Lady Shires receive sportsmanship award – While the Houlton High School girl’s basketball team didn’t garner a trophy at the Eastern Maine Class B Tournament, what they did receive, according to Principal Joseph Feeney, was equally important. For the eighth time, a Houlton High school basketball team has brought home a Good Sportsmanship Award Banner. For the Houlton Lady Shires, this is their third consecutive honor, two years ago, they earned the Maine Principals’ Association (MPA) Good Sportsmanship award and last year, they were recipients of the International Approved Board of Basketball Officials’ Sportsmanship award for the Aroostook League.
Promoted To Corporal – On February 1, 1999, Nicholas E. Hall was promoted to the rank of corporal in the United States Marine Corps. He enlisted in 1996 and is studying avionics with the Marine Aviation Training Support Group in Pensacola, Fla. In May, he will receive further training at Camp Pendleton in California.
