50 Years Ago — Feb. 20, 1974
Jonathan returns to class – The last time the first-graders of Mrs. Beverly Madore’s class at St. Thomas School, Madawaska, were introduced to Jonathon Palmer, they didn’t know whether he would be Jonathan or Joanna. This return visit is a follow-up to a previous visit, when Mrs. Linda Palmer was nine months pregnant and visited the first grade as a part of the Family Life program. The children asked an unending amount of questions and Mrs. Palmer, with Jonathan’s help, more than satisfied their interests.

Madawaska native looking for third Grammy – When the Grammy Awards aired this evening in 1999 on national television, at least one St. John Valley family will be watching with more than casual interest. With roots firmly planted in Madawaska — he was born on 5th Avenue — Roland White and his bluegrass band are up for their third musical award. Winner of the 1996 Grammy for Bluegrass Album of the Year, The Nashville BlueGrass Band is one of the nominees in this year’s Best Bluegrass album category.

Back-to-back storms dump snow — The Valentine’s Day storm Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, dumped 6 inches in Madawaska overnight, and 8 inches in Fort Kent, according to Mal Walker, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Caribou. On Friday, a NWS winter storm warning was in effect for another 6 to 10 inches of new snow. After a break on Saturday, more snow arrived overnight accumulating 3.5 more inches.
