Two men who sped away from a Fort Fairfield potato storage site Friday night led police on a high-speed chase before one got away and the other rolled his vehicle on Main Street.
An officer patrolling Dorsey Road noticed the two vehicles and discovered one, a Chevrolet Trailblazer, had false plates attached, Police Chief Matthew Cummings said.
The officer tried to stop the Chevrolet for the plate violation, but both cars sped away. Police found the Trailblazer rolled over on Main Street after it veered off the road and struck a snowbank, Cummings said. The other vehicle fled.
Police helped extricate the driver from the Chevrolet. He refused to give his name, but police later identified him as Cory McBreairty, 43, of Caribou. He was transported to Northern Light A.R. Gould Hospital in Presque Isle and was later medically cleared, police said.
He was taken to the Aroostook County Jail, where he awaits a court date.
McBreairty was charged with eluding an officer, driving to endanger, criminal speed, attaching false plates, operating after suspension, reckless conduct, unlawful possession of fentanyl and failure to provide name and date of birth.
He also had two active arrest warrants for probation revocation, Cummings said.
